Automated Testing for Implantable Heart Failure Devices

Focus developed an automated testing system for Impulse Dynamics’ implantable heart failure devices. The system improves the reliability, traceability, and efficiency of device verification.

Impulse Dynamics develops implantable devices for chronic heart failure based on CCM therapy. CCM delivers precisely timed electrical signals that strengthen the heart’s contraction and improve quality of life for selected patients. The Optimizer® Smart platform has been implanted in more than 9,000 patients. Impulse Dynamics partnered with Focus to strengthen its automated testing for these implantable devices.

Implantable cardiac devices are safety-critical, so validation has to be rigorous, repeatable, and fully traceable. Manual testing is slow, depends on the operator, and is hard to scale across the many configurations and clinical conditions a device must handle.

What We Built

Focus developed a hardware-in-the-loop testing system that evaluates the performance of implantable devices without human intervention. The system controls measurement instruments automatically and injects device configurations and simulated cardiac signals. It then compares the results against expected outcomes. Every run produces an automatic report recording each test’s results, which supports traceability, failure analysis, and fast identification of unexpected behavior.

Impact

Focus’s automated testing work helps Impulse Dynamics verify its implantable heart failure devices more efficiently and consistently, supporting products that meet the highest medical device standards.

Hardware-in-the-loop testing

Test runs execute end to end automatically, from instrument control to signal injection to result comparison.

Full Traceability

Every run produces an automatic report that records each test’s results, which supports failure analysis and regulatory documentation.

Scalable Verification

Device configurations and simulated cardiac conditions can be tested repeatably, without depending on manual operators.
